We are often
asked-
If you have never had a professional therapeutic
massage, then here are answers to the most commonly asked
questions. Answers that will help to make your first massage not only an enjoyable experience, but also a beginning step towards relaxation and better health. . . .
1.
Do I have to get naked?
No. A professional massage therapist should NEVER require you to do anything that will make you uncomfortable. The therapist should
tell you to undress to your level of comfort. And, they should leave the room while you change (even if the therapist is the same gender). They should always provide a sheet for your coverage on the table. The therapist will uncover only the area being treated. SWEDISH MASSAGE is better performed with you disrobed to your level of comfort, but ON-SITE SEATED MASSAGE and SHIATSU MASSAGE is done while fully-clothed;
2. How do I find therapists who know what they are doing?
You can call the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) in Evanston, Illinois,
at (847) 864-0123 or www.amtamassage.org
for the names of qualified practitioners in your area, or for the number of your local AMTA chapter. You can also call the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage.
3. What about the gender issue?
Nearly 77% of AMTA members are female. However, all certified massage therapists (male and female) are trained professionals. Therefore, the gender of the therapist should have NO effect on your massage, apart from your own comfort
level.
4. What if I am ticklish?
People who are normally ticklish do not have the same response to a skilled massage practitioner. The quality of a nurturing touch is different from one that is playful or threatening. A professional massage therapist can modify his or her strokes if they sense your tickle reflex
tensing.
5. Will it hurt?
Although some pressure on trigger points, for example, may be uncomfortable or painful, the goal of therapeutic massage is to relieve pain and promote circulation in the body. Communication, however, is essential. Your therapist should check in with you often to see if the pressure is appropriate. "Massage is a non-verbal form of communication," points out Elliot Greene, past president of the AMTA, "but it is important for you to tell your therapist how various strokes
feel".
6. How much will it cost?
Rates vary, ranging from $45.00 per 30 minute massage to $90.00 per 60-minute session
depending on the type of massage. Our on hour Swedish Massage
(most commonly requested) is $75.00 .
7. Where will it take place?
Your massage will be given in calm, restful, quite, private room.
8. What if I want to go out afterward?
Following a therapeutic massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water to flush out toxins. If you wish to go out afterwards, be aware that you will be in a relaxed state and may need to take it easy. Also, with most types of massage, with the exception of ON-SITE SEATED MASSAGE, you will also get a good scalp rub and facial massage, both helpful in relieving tension. Therefore, it is a good idea to remove make-up, glasses (or even contact lenses), and jewelry before beginning a massage. Afterward, you will most likely need to allow additional time in preparation for going out;
9. How often should I get a massage?
You should feel the benefits after the first massage, but it is recommended that you get a massage every week if possible. If not, then one treatment a month is the minimum number to get cumulative benefit. The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine has documented the positive effects of massage on job performance and stress reduction. The research indicates that even a 15-minute SEATED MASSAGE, provided twice weekly, resulted in decreased job stress and significant improvements in productivity.
